our new student Hailey. She has just moved here from Kentucky. So when you
see her, please give her a big ILE welcome!

This Friday is the last day to turn in items for the adopt-a-family program.
Nothing was turned in today, so the list that went home last Wednesday
is still current as to what is needed. Thank you in advance for helping a
family in our community during Christmas.

We are reading a folktale, Two of Everything and will focus on understanding
characters and summarizing the story. Our spelling words have the vowel
digraphs -ee and -ea. In language we are learning to write friendly letters
and will be writing a letter to Santa this week!

will be next Monday. Tonight the math homework is extra practice with
this skill.

As part of this unit, students will pick a country to research. They will prepare
an oral report and a special project about that country. A note about the project
will be in Wednesday folders along with the country your child chooses. If your
family has a special connection to a particular country, and your child would
like to select that country, please let me know. There projects will be due

The Friday before fall break our librarian, Mrs. MacKorell, told our class about the October

Hello Parents!
I think your children would agree that we had a great first day of 2nd grade! During math
we got to have m&m's. We all got a skittle for waiting nicely in the halls. We got to
share fun facts about ourselves with our friends, listen to stories, color, go to recess and
art! What's not to love about 2nd grade!
We do not have our actual "Take Home" folders yet. So today your child is bringing home
a yellow folder. Inside you will find their behavior calendar and an explanation of that
calendar. Please review this with your child, initial the calendar and send it back tomorrow.
Everyone did a fantastic job of being here by 8:15 and getting our day off to a great start - thank you!
I hope you have a great night with your 2nd grader because I had a great day with them!
If you have any questions please let me know.

Happy 100th day of school to us!
We have had a fun day of learning/celebrating, and to top it off we got out of school early!

Because of the short week, we are not doing our normal weekly story and spelling this week. However, students are responsible for 3 nights of 15 minute reading/writing homework that must be turned in no later than Friday morning.

We will begin our math unit on time and temperature and we will continue learning about adjectives in language.

This Friday, the second grade classes will be having a "Winter Read-In". This is a fun day filled with reading, reading, and more reading! The students will keep a reading log of all the books they read that day, and will also illustrate their favorite book.

For the Read-In, students may bring a sleeping bag or blanket (beach towels also work great!) to school. The students will have to carry their sleeping bags on the bus, so we will not have room for pillows. We are looking forward to a fun day filled with reading!

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Have a wonderful week!

Hello Parents!

I hope each of you enjoyed the beautiful weekend since we are starting off to a soggy week!

We have a lot to cover so here it goes............

On Friday, your child brought home their Biography Project information.  Please help your child choose a famous person
to read about.  They must have a book on or close to their reading level.  They must have their book approved by me no later than this Thursday, January 16th.  They will present their projects on January 30th and 31st.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Your child will have new reading homework starting tonight.  They are required to read 15 minutes Monday - Thursday nights and write 2-3 sentences about what they read.  They have a sheet to fill out in their Take Home Folders.  This sheet will be turned in on Friday mornings.  They will receive one reading grade, based on the completion and accuracy of this homework, each of the remaining 9 weeks.  This is to help with two areas of focus this semester.  One is to build up their reading ability by being able to write about what they read, and secondly to be able to write a compete sentence with correct capitalization and punctuation.  They may use their reading of the weekly story as part of their required 15 minutes.  Directions are included on the sheet.  Again, if you have questions, please let me know.

Mrs. Kane
