Hello Parents!

Welcome back from another long weekend! We only have 5 snow days left, so let's hope we don't go over. It is only the beginning of February!

This week we are continuing our unit on time and temperature in math. We will have a test on this unit on Friday. In language, we continue to work with adjectives. Our test on this unit should be next week. I will let you know more about that next week.

In reading we are studying about story structure - setting, characters, beginning, middle, and end. Our story is Mr. Tanen's Tie Trouble. We are also reviewing our infer/predict skills.

Homework:
Tuesday - Friday - 15 minutes of reading each night with 2-3 sentences about the reading, study spelling words, read this week's story.
Wednesday - math study guide due on Friday

Friday - Spelling test, phonics assessment, reading assessment, math test

Last week I sent home a pink sheet explaining our Valentine's day activities. Please help your child decorate a shoe box to hold their Valentines and bring it in on Friday, February 14th. Although there is not an actual party, we will exchange Valentines and have a special snack.

Progress reports will come home on Thursday. Please sign the copy and send it back the next day.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Have a great week!

We are reading Officer Buckle and Gloria and reviewing the skill of cause and effect this week.

Happy 100th day of school to us!
We have had a fun day of learning/celebrating, and to top it off we got out of school early!

Because of the short week, we are not doing our normal weekly story and spelling this week. However, students are responsible for 3 nights of 15 minute reading/writing homework that must be turned in no later than Friday morning.

We will begin our math unit on time and temperature and we will continue learning about adjectives in language.

This Friday, the second grade classes will be having a "Winter Read-In". This is a fun day filled with reading, reading, and more reading! The students will keep a reading log of all the books they read that day, and will also illustrate their favorite book.

For the Read-In, students may bring a sleeping bag or blanket (beach towels also work great!) to school. The students will have to carry their sleeping bags on the bus, so we will not have room for pillows. We are looking forward to a fun day filled with reading!

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Have a wonderful week!

Hello Parents!

I hope each of you enjoyed the beautiful weekend since we are starting off to a soggy week!

We have a lot to cover so here it goes............

On Friday, your child brought home their Biography Project information.  Please help your child choose a famous person
to read about.  They must have a book on or close to their reading level.  They must have their book approved by me no later than this Thursday, January 16th.  They will present their projects on January 30th and 31st.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Your child will have new reading homework starting tonight.  They are required to read 15 minutes Monday - Thursday nights and write 2-3 sentences about what they read.  They have a sheet to fill out in their Take Home Folders.  This sheet will be turned in on Friday mornings.  They will receive one reading grade, based on the completion and accuracy of this homework, each of the remaining 9 weeks.  This is to help with two areas of focus this semester.  One is to build up their reading ability by being able to write about what they read, and secondly to be able to write a compete sentence with correct capitalization and punctuation.  They may use their reading of the weekly story as part of their required 15 minutes.  Directions are included on the sheet.  Again, if you have questions, please let me know.

Dear Parents,
We are having a wonderful time learning about other countries this week! The only homework this week is to complete
the Holiday Around the World project. Girls will make their presentation on Wednesday, and boys will make their presentation on Thursday. Please let your child practice their oral presentation at home in front of you or other family members. They always enjoy doing this and they learn so much about the world around them!
Friday we will have our party starting at 10:30 with dismissal at 11:30.
Can you feel the excitement in the air? I can!
Have a great week!

Happy Monday Everyone!
I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday as much as I did! It sounds like you did based on what I heard from the children!
We have a red container outside our classroom to place items for our Adopt-a-family. If you are able to make a donation, please send it in by Friday. If you have questions about what is needed, please email Aimee Fuqua at aimeefuqua@comcast.net. Thank you for any donation you are able to make.
This is the last week we will have a reading story/test and spelling words for this nine weeks. After this week, Second Grade will start our Holidays Around the World unit during our normal reading time. We will be learning about how other countries celebrate holidays. This is always a lot of fun for the students. Tomrrow your student will pick a country to do a report on. If your family has a personal connection to a country, and your child would like to report on that country, please let me know by tomorrow so I can reserve that country for your child. I will be sending home more information about this tomorrow.

Happy Monday Everyone!
I hope everyone had a pleasant weekend. We had a beautiful day to start off our new week! It was wonderful to go
outside for recess today :)
We are wrapping up Topic 8 in math, adding two digit numbers with regrouping. It was called "carrying" when I was in school! We will have our test on Wednesday. Your student has their study guide in their take home folder today. This is due by Wednesday.
You can give your child extra practice by having them add two digit numbers that they will and won't have to regroup or "carry" -
54+18= ?, 21+15=?, etc. Next we will start subtraction with regrouping, or "borrowing" as it was called when I was in school.
Subtraction is a big concept for second grade!
I have heard from several students that they are having trouble pulling up the Journeys book online. If you would prefer your
child to bring their book home, we can do that - just let me or your child know.
Homework this week:
Monday - Thursday: math facts practice due Tuesday, study spelling words, math study guide due by Wednesday, reading and spelling homework due by Friday
Wednesday - math addition with regrouping test
Friday - reading and spelling tests
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Have a wonderful week!
