Hello Parents!

This week we are learning about the cultures of Native Americans.  This is always a fun unit for second graders!  Our spelling pattern this week is making words plural that end in the letter y.  (change the y to i and add -es)  We will review reflexive pronouns and work on writing more interesting sentences that don't start with "I".  Some examples I gave the class were - "On Saturday I _____" "After we went to the movies I _____"  "Instead of playing soccer I _____."

On Friday we will have our spelling assessment and we will begin our writing assessment for report cards.

In math we are creating and using the data in graphs and in science we are learning about animal habitats.

Reading Challenge reading logs can be turned in anytime.  We will begin graphing the total number of minutes we have read so far!  Happy Reading!

Happy Monday Everyone!

This week we are working on informative writing.  We read two articles today about phones now and long ago and will be writing an informative paragraph about what we learned.  Most have never seen a pay phone and many didn't know what a landline was.  Yes, I am feeling a bit old!

In language we are using irregular past tense verbs and will be learning about reflexive pronouns (myself, himself, ourselves, herself, etc.)  The spelling pattern for this week is consonant digraphs (sh, th, ch, wh) and our spelling test will be on Friday.

In math we are solving story problems and adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers.  We will have our next unit test on Thursday.  We will do the pre-test in class on Wednesday and they will bring it home that night so that to review.

If your child is going to buy the Mega Pass that will benefit Special Olympics, please turn the form and money in no later than Wednesday.  The purchase of the pass allows your child to participate in pj day, crazy sock day, team jersey day, book character day, hat day, and stuffed animal day the week of November 12-16.

Friday is ILE's Thanksgiving lunch.  We will eat lunch at 12:15 in the cafeteria at table 1.  I hope you are able to join us!

Hello Parents!

A BIG thank you to all the parents that contributed to make our Halloween a huge success!  I hope you have had time to take a look at the pictures on Class Dojo!

This week we are working on our informative writing.  We will write about what we learned about the life cycle of a butterfly.  We will also continue learning about how text features help us understand our reading.  In language we are learning about irregular past tense verbs (go-went, come-came, do-did). We will not have a spelling test this week.

In math we are adding two digit numbers and solving word problems.  Some students have unfinished math classwork to complete as homework.

Students are now able to take AR tests.  AR is a wonderful motivator for some students and not for others.  Because of this I have asked them to set a goal for themselves.  Maybe they want to test on 2 books per week, maybe 5. They should read a book 2 times before testing on the book. However, for those that will begin testing on chapter books, once is enough. I explained that I don't want them to rush through books just to take a test.  I will give them Dojo points for books they test on AND score at least 80%.  Beginning next week I will print their AR report and include it in their Wednesday folders so you can see their progress.

Wednesday, November 6th - NO SCHOOL

Friday, November 9th - Thanksgiving lunch at 12:15

Happy Monday Everyone!

If you haven't already heard, all of our caterpillars are now chrysalises!  We should have butterflies emerging any day now!  We are so excited!!

This week we are learning about how text features help us understand what we are reading.  We will also be determining the main idea of a text and how to use context clues to find the meaning of unknown words.  Our spelling pattern this week is double consonants and -ck.  Our spelling test will be on Thursday this week because of all the activities that will be taking place on Friday. In math we will be adding and subtracting on the number line.

Today your child brought home a wealth of information.  Please look in their take home folder to find information on:

*Report Cards - Please sign one copy and return in envelope tomorrow.  Everything else is for you to keep at home.

*Art to Remember

*Safety drills

*Thanksgiving lunch

Please take the time to review each item as there is a lot of information you need to know.

This week we are collecting can goods for those in need.  Cans can be brought to school any day this week.  Friday will be our Fall parade and parties.

Hello Parents!

I hope everyone enjoyed their fall break!  From what I've been hearing in class today, it sounds like fun was had by all!

This week we reading Half Chicken, a folktale, that teaches a lesson about helping people when we are able.  We will learn about adverbs and begin using them in our writing.  Our spelling pattern this week is final consonant blends nd, ng, nk, nt, ft, xt, and mp.  We will have our spelling test on Friday.  In math we are beginning unit 3 where we will be adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers on the number line.

Warrior Walk money is due on Wednesday!  Thank you all for your help with this fundraiser!

Hello Everyone!

Thank you to everyone who came out to cheer us on during Warrior Walk on Friday!  We did an amazing job.  I am so proud of each and every student!

This week we are reading a folk tale and determining the moral of the story.  We are also reviewing proper nouns, and our spelling pattern is consonant blends with r, l, and s.  Our spelling test will be on Thursday this week!  In math we are looking at number patterns.

This Friday is our next Focus Friday. We will learn about speaking with good purpose. I also have a few fun surprises that I can't wait to share with the kiddos!  Please have your child dress in orange!

Thursday is make up/retake picture day.  If you would like your child to have their picture made please let me know.

Next week is fall break!  I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Happy Monday!

This Friday is Warrior Walk and our color is orange.  T-shirts should be coming home on Wednesday.  Dress up in as much orange as you can!  Mrs. Mitchell has informed the students not to put color in their hair except for maybe one streak of orange if desired.  We will be walking from 1:15-1:45 if you would like to come cheer us on!  In case you didn't see the Dojo message, our classroom door won 1st prize for WW decorations in second grade!!  Thank you parents for such a fun door!

We will have several report card assessments this week.  Therefore, we will not be doing a spelling test this week.  Please make sure your child is getting enough sleep and having a good breakfast!  Also, please don't forget to send a snack.  They get very hungry before lunch.  If your child is responsible for getting their own snack ready, which is a great way for them to show responsibility, please review that routine with them to make sure they are remembering!

This week in math will be begin adding double digit numbers on the number line.  We will have our second unit test in math on Friday morning.  I will send home the pretest on Tuesday and it is due back on Thursday for us to review in class.

In language arts we are writing narratives and using adjectives in our sentences.  We are also looking at the pictures in our stories to help us understand the text better!
