Welcome Back!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving Break!  From all the stories
I have been hearing, it sounds as if you did!

This week we are reading a fun story Dex the Heart of a Hero.  We will
work on understanding characters and comparing and contrasting. In
language we will be writing a narrative paragraph.  We will go back
and revise and edit it as well.  Our spelling words this week all end in
-s or -es.

We have begun Unit 4 in math which is all about measuring.  This is
a fun unit for the children.  They love to get up and measure objects
in the classroom and each other!

Some students didn't finish their math worksheet in class today and
will be bringing it home to complete tonight.

ILE's Adopt-a-family is in full swing.  Our room coordinators have
sent out the information about our family.  Thank you to everyone
who is able to help with this worthy project.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

a great time creating the pictures to go with our problems!

We are our of school tomorrow for election day.

Our class will visit the book fair Thursday morning and Friday
after lunch.  You can send money on either of these days for
your child to shop.

Happy Halloween!

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Halloween party
so much fun Friday!  It was a great day!

This week we are looking forward to our field trip to Traveler's Rest
on Wednesday.  Please have your child wear their GREEN ILE
field trip shirts.  These came home last week.  We will also
have a picnic lunch.  Make sure they bring their sack lunch and
a small towel to sit on.  Please send their lunches in a sack or
large Ziploc bag with their names on them.  Drinks should also
be in disposable bottles, pouches, or boxes.

This week we are reading Officer Buckle and Gloria. We will practice
asking and answering questions such as who, what, when, how, and

Hello Everyone,

What a beautiful day we have had to start our week!

This week we will continue reading from our science books about
animal habitats and will be looking at text features.  This week
we are learning about water habitats.  In language we will continue
our work on plural nouns, and in spelling our spelling pattern
is double consonants and -ck.

In math we are concentrating on skip jumping using 1's, 5's, and 10's.
We will also look at a large collection of craft sticks and regroup
them into hundreds, tens, and ones using the splitting strategy
(first adding the tens, then the ones, and then adding the tens and
ones to get the total.)

This is Red Ribbon week (drug education.)  Our remaining themes
are as follows:
Tues: wear bright or mismatched socks "Sock it to drugs"\
Wed: team sports clothing "Team up against alcohol"
Thurs: wear red "Red Ribbon Week"
Fri: dress up during the fall parade "Say BOO to tobacco"

Our fall parade is Friday.  Students may bring a costume to
change into in the afternoon for the parade.  The parade
begins at 2:00 and our party will follow.  We hope you can
come and see us all dressed up!

If your child didn't finish their math work in class today, they
will have it in their Take Home folder to complete and return
tomorrow.

Also, if you would like to order any of your child's "Art to Remember"
and benefit the art department, the orders are due by
Wednesday, Oct. 26th.

non-standard units (unifix cubes).

Next Friday, September 30th, is Warrior Walk.  I hope you can come

Tuesday, September 13, 2016

Parents,

I would like to fill you in on some grading procedures that you will see at the tops of papers. Remember that there will be no % grades or letter grades this year.

check marks:
- a "check mark" means that I looked briefly at the work and was simply looking for completion
- a "check - " means that the student did not do as well as I would have expected
- a "check + " means that the student did better than I expected

-0, -1, -2, ...:
- simply shows how many mistakes a student had on an assignment

1,2,3,4:
-This is the standard proficiency scale of standards for the year.

1 means that a student with help, has partial success of basic processes
2 means that a student performs basic processes and is progressing towards the standard
3 means that a student has mastery of the standard at the current expectations
4 means that a student shows an in-depth understanding that goes beyond the grade level expectations

If a paper is marked with 1, 2, 3, or 4 it is POSSIBLE that this will be used to determine the students' mastery of a standard.

Correct and return - these do not have to be returned the next day.

I hope this answers some questions...

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are having a wonderful week. Second grade is just humming
along!

Picture day is tomorrow.  Make sure your child brings their smile .

If you send an email or message via Dojo about a change in how
your child will go home, I will respond to let you know I got it.
If you do not hear from me, please assume I do not know and
call the office.

This week we continue to learn procedures and how to be a second
grader.  We will begin our reading curriculum next week.  Therefore
there will be a spelling pre-test on Monday to determine what list
your child will study.  As a reminder, if your child misses 0-2 words
on the pre-test they are given a different list to study.  Spelling
tests this year will consist of 5 dictation sentences where I am looking
for the spelling word to be spelled correctly, capital letter at the
beginning, and punctuation at the end.

We will have math homework Wednesday and Friday this week.  We will
begin the homework in class.  If your child doesn't finish, they will
bring the remainder home to complete.  Friday's homework has a game
and a worksheet to go with it.  If they complete the worksheet in class
they will still bring the game home to play.

Have a wonderful week!

Happy Monday Everyone!

We have had an amazing day today!  We have tried new seats and
enjoyed getting to know each other.  Your child will bring home their
take home folder everyday. You can't miss it.  It is bright orange and yellow.
Please help your child get in the habit of checking the folder every
day to see if they have work to complete, have something signed, or
any communication between the school and home.

I will send a weekly email every Monday to let you know what is
happening for the week.  This is where I will list any homework or
tests that we have for the week. There will be neither this week!

Have a wonderful week!

Dear Parents,

I can't thank you enough for the kindness you showed me last week.  All of the sweet
notes of encouragement really touched my heart.  You are a big part of the reason
ILE is such a special school!  And a special thank you to all the parents who came
Friday to help with field day.  Mrs. Culp said you guys rocked it and that I won the
room mom lottery this year!  Thank you for helping make field day special for our
class.

This week we will continue reading Stone Fox.  This will be our last spelling test and
our spelling patter is -ou and -ow.  In math we will begin division concepts and
interpreting fractions.

Homework this week will be to read for pleasure and to study spelling words.

Have a wonderful week!

Happy Monday Everyone!

I hope all you mothers were treated extra special yesterday and know how much you
are appreciated by your families.

Thank you for all the beautiful flowers today.  Your gardens must be spectacular based
on what was shared with me today.

Friday is Field Day!  If your child bought a field day shirt, please send them in it.  If they
didn't purchase a shirt, please have them wear red if possible.  Please apply sunscreen
to your child before they leave home and make sure they bring a water bottle.

This week we started a new chapter book, Stone Fox.  Our spelling words this week
have the spelling pattern -oo, like in book.  We will continue to improve our writing
in language.  In math we continue to work on measuring with centimeters and
working with fractions.

The only homework this week is to study spelling words and to read for pleasure.                               They do not have to write about what they are reading.

On a personal note, I wanted to let you know that I will not be at school this
Thursday and Friday.  I am very sad that I will miss field day, but it can't be avoided.
My family has recently found out that my mother has stage 4 lung cancer and I have
to take her to an appointment at Sarah Cannon Cancer Center to see if she can get in
a clinical trial.  I wanted you to know this because it would have to be something as
important as this to make me miss spending field day with my class.  Mrs. Burgess will
be my sub on Thursday.  The kids LOVE her!  At this time, I do not know who my
sub will be for Friday.  We are still working on that.  But, I have had some wonderful
mothers volunteer to help with field day.  Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy
the fun and help the kiddos with the games.  It will be a special day!

Have a blessed week!

This week we are reading from our science books about matter!
Our spelling words have the prefixes re- and un-.  In language
we are writing to make our sentences come to life!  Math is
all about geometry!

For a math activity that is coming up we need a few paper towel
cardboard tubes or toilet paper tubes.  Each student will need
a 4 inch section.  If you can send those in over the next week
that would be very helpful!

Also, does anyone have a die-cut machine that would be willing
and able to cut paper for a math lesson that is coming up in a
couple of weeks?

Homework:

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone enjoyed their week of Spring Break!  Now it is time
to finish this year strong and get these kiddos ready for 3rd grade!

Students are bringing home their school picture proofs in their
take home folders.  If you would like to purchase pictures, please
return the order form this week.

This week we are reading a story "My Name is Gabriella."  This is a
story about a teacher and a poet.  We will be writing some of our
own poetry this week!  Our spelling words are homophones.  In math
we continue our unit on geometry.

Our homework this week will consist of reading and writing
about what we read in our new reading journals.  Students
should read each night Monday - Wednesday and then write
about what they read in their journals.  They can retell what
they read, tell me something funny they read, did they learn
something new, did what they read remind them something
that happened to themselves or something they read about
in another book.  They should have the date and the title of
what they read at the top of the page.  They can use 1 page
per entry to write a paragraph consisting of at least 5 sentences.
These will be turned in on Thursday morning.

On Thursday, they will read this week's story and study their
spelling words.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

envelope.  Please sign one of them and return it next Wednesday
in the envelope.  The other copy is for you to keep.

Next week we will continue with the lessons that were missed
this week due to snow.  So the spelling and reading tests will
be next week.  The language test I will push to the following
Monday.

At this time we will still plan to have our Winter Read-In
next Friday.

I still have a few spots open if you need to schedule a
conference for Tuesday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Happy Monday!

For the next month our schedule is changing somewhat to
accommodate the 3-5 grade testing schedule.  That means
that our related arts time will be from 10:30-11:15 instead
of in the afternoon.  We will now have part of our math in the
afternoon.

Parent teacher conferences are Tuesday, February 16th.  I still
have a few open times if you need to schedule a meeting.

On Friday we will exchange Valentine's with our classmates.
Please send in your child's Valentine box and cards Friday
morning.  This is not a party.  We will be passing them out
as time allows throughout the day.

This week we are reading a passage "Two Famous Presidents" and
we will compare and contrast these two men.  Our spelling words
have the long e sound using the letter y.  We will finish our unit
on adjectives with a test on Friday.  In math we are learning place
value to 1000.

Wednesday:  Wed. folders, math, read 15 minutes

are looking at arrays and how repeated addition relates to \
multiplication.

Thursday is our PTO performance.  I look forward to seeing
a grand show and hope to see you there as well.

Hello Parents!

I hope everyone enjoyed the extra day off this week!  The students are all
buzzing about the chance of seeing snow tomorrow.  I think there will
be lots of ice cubes flushed and pajamas worn inside out tonight!

This week we are reading from our science books about weather and
seasons.  We have started our unit on adjectives in language and our
spelling words have the endings -ed and -ing.  Because it is a short
week (and possibly shorter than planned), we will not have a spelling
test this week.  We will work with these words for the next two weeks
and will test on January 29th.  Also, there will not be a reading test this
week or next.

In math we are continuing our unit on measurement.  This will be concluded
this week or next if the weather prevents us from coming to school.

Please remember that biography projects will be presented next
week as follows:  Student #1-8 on Tuesday, Jan. 26
Student #9-17 on Wednesday, Jan. 27
Student #18-25 on Thursday, Jan. 28
Students should not bring in their "People Poster" until the day of
their presentation.

Please remember that we have snack every day.  With our lunch being after
12:00, students are VERY hungry by 10:30.  They need something nutritious
to get them through until lunch time.  Please do not send candy for a snack.

Homework:  Reading homework all week is to work on the biography project.
Tuesday:  Math
Wednesday:  Wed. folders, math

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Happy Monday!

This week are continuing our study of biographies with The Dog That Dug
for Dinosaurs.  We will wrap up our unit on verbs with a test on Wednesday.
Our spelling words this week are compound words.  In math, we continue
our study of measurement.

Please remember all biographies for the biography project must be
approved by me no later than Wednesday.  Your child should bring in the
book they want to read for my approval.  Remember the goal of this
project is for the student to READ the biography.  I do not want them
going to the internet for information about their person.

There will be no pictures taken tomorrow as indicated on the school
calendar.   We will be taking yearbook pictures on Friday.  There is a
green paper coming home in your child's folder with more information.

Homework:  I will not assign more reading homework while students
are working on their biography projects.  That is their reading homework.
Monday:  math
Tuesday: Review language study guide for test on Wednesday
Wednesday: Wed. folders, math
Thursday:  Read The Dog That Dug for Dinosaurs, study spelling words

Have a wonderful week!

Happy New Year!

This week we are reading a biography, Helen Keller.  Our skill will be identifying the author's purpose by looking at text evidence.  In language we are continuing our unit on verbs and will have a unit test on verbs next week.  Our spelling words have the long o sound using -o, -oa, or -ow.

In math this week our measuring focus will turn from inches and feet to yards.

Second graders will be doing a biography project this month.  The paper work will come home in Wednesday folders tomorrow that will explain the process.  We started talking about biographies today.  They will need to get a biography to read.  They can not get their information from the internet.  The biography can come from home, the public library, the school library, or our classroom library.  Their book must be approved by me no later than January 13th.  Their reading homework this month is to find their biography, read the biography, and work on their project.  Please let me know if you have questions after you receive the information tomorrow.

Homework:
Tuesday - look for a biography
Wednesday - Math, Wed. folders
Thursday - Read Helen Keller, study spelling words, report cards come home

Looking ahead:
Jan. 18th - No School
Jan. 28 - 2nd grade performance
